what is musica divina?

As with Lectio Divina (sacred hearing) and Visio Divina (sacred seeing), Musica Divina (sacred listening) serves as another vital pathway in prayer. This method of prayer helps us hear the Father's heart clearly.

Music is a universal language, integral to every culture worldwide. Each of us carries within us early childhood memories that familiar music can evoke. Music transcends the soul, awakening emotions and uniting us in a shared human experience.

"Music is the space between notes." – French composer Claude Debussy once said. His words remind us that too much "clutter" can impair our ability to hear from our Great Composer. Music provides us with the space we need to embrace stillness and connect in harmony with God.

Understanding Musica Divina

Musica Divina is a beautiful marriage of hearing God through music He inspired and listening to the song's poetic lyrics. Our spirits react emotionally to these lyrics. God created music to draw us closer to His heart. Perhaps, like David in the Psalms, you might find inspiration to compose a song of worship that helps others enter a Musica Divina meditation.

How to Practice Musica Divina Meditation

Here are some steps to guide you through a Musica Divina meditation:

  1. Select Your Music

    Choose a piece of music that resonates with you. It could be a hymn, an inspired worship song, or even an instrumental piece.

  2. Create Your Space

    Find a location where you won't be distracted. This space should feel peaceful and inviting.

  3. Gather Your Materials

    Grab a paper and pen to jot down your thoughts during meditation.

  4. Get Comfortable

    Sit in a comfortable position. Soften your eyes and take a deep, cleansing breath. Slowly exhale.

  5. Invite Presence

    Take another deep breath and, as you exhale, invite the Lord to be with you and speak to you.

  6. Express Gratitude

    Offer a moment of gratitude to the Lord for His presence in your life.

    {Pause}

Hear

Now, listen closely to the lyrics and melody, especially if your selection includes lyrics. Allow the music to envelop you, creating a cocoon of peace. {Pause}

Meditate

Reflect on the following questions:

  • How are you feeling?

  • What emotions are you experiencing?

  • What memories come to mind?

  • Is there a part of the lyrics that resonates with your heart?

  • What is God saying to you?

{Pause}

Pray

Listen a third time, allowing your thoughts to converse openly with the Lord. Pay attention to how He may be responding to you. Consider these questions:

  • Is there a specific scripture that comes to mind?

  • How do you need to respond to God?

{Pause}

Stillness

Allow yourself to remain in solitude. Sit in the Presence of God without doing anything. Simply "be" with Him. {Pause}

Finish with a gratitude prayer to the Father, expressing your appreciation for this time of self-reflection and conversation with Him.
